Abstract

The investigation of the valve apparatus along the course of the femoral and external iliac veins in Primates, and the comparative assessment of the data thus obtained with the author`s personal observations on the valvular apparatus of the identical veins in man, warrants the drawing of the following conclusions: 1. The valves along the main course „femoral-external iliac vein` in Primates are fewer than in humans. They usually count two and very seldom three, and in certain limbs do not reach even the average number of valves in man. 2. In Primates the absence of a valve, located at the level of the inguinal ligament or immediately beneath, it is a constant finding, whereas in man such a valve is almost invariably noted. Such differences might be related to the different position of the body, respectively a different status of the hip joint, which may well account for altering the influence exerted by the inguinal ligament upon the vein. 3. The valves, situated distally to the major tributary orifices, are found in the immediate vicinity to the orifices, which is indicative for their function being largely dependent on the blood stream received from the tributaries. In this respect Primates resemble man, and differ from the dog. 4. The venous wall within the area of the valve sinuses exhibits for a considerable length absence of circular musculature and, in single areas— the presence of longitudinal striated muscle fibres. The latter finding is indicative for the substantial functional strain to which the valves are subjected.
