Abstract

The conventional chemical agents for chemo-mechanical retraction of free gingival margin that are widely applied in the contemporary dental medicine show some adverse effects - local as well as systematic. Probably the perfect retraction agent does not exist. This is the reason that provokes many scientists to study alternative chemical compounds for cord impregnation that should be safe and biocompatible. α-adrenergic sympaticomimetic decongestants - nasal and eye drops, are among the experimental group - 0,05% HCl- tetrahydrozoline, 0,05% HCl- oxymetazoline и 10% HCl- phenylephrine.

The level of awareness concerning alternative chemical agents for retraction of the gingival groove is low. There is interest in including the method as part of the impression protocol for the purposes of prosthetic dentistry. Focused efforts should be done towards in vitro and in vivo experiments of the alternative compounds and the data should be presented to the dental society.
