Phytoestrogens: Health benefits and possible adverse effect

Milka Nashar

Abstract

Phytoestrogens are nonsteroidal plant polyphenolic compounds that are found to bind selectively estrogen receptors and thus to exert estrogen-like or anti-estrogen action. Consumption of phytoestrogens rich foods is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, hormone-dependent breast cancer, etc. However, some scientists have warned that along with the beneficial effects, phytoestrogens can cause endocrine disturbances. Present review summarizes the scientific evidences about health benefits and adverse effects of phytoestrogens consumption on the human health.
