Effect of mulberry heartwood ethanol extract on the transcriptional levels of genes related to oxidative status

Abstract

Oxidative stress in adipose tissue is a key factor in the pathogenesis of chronic metabolic disorders such as obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. In the present study a model of oxidative stress in a preadipocyte cell culture was developed in order to in- vestigate the effect of Morus nigra (mulberry) heart- wood ethanol extract on the gene expression of two antioxidant enzymes - gamma-glutamylcystein ligase and glutathione peroxidase. The results revealed the potential of the extract to modulate the the expression of both genes and probably to mantain intracellular glutathione levels. In conclusion, the mulberry heart- wood ethanol extract could have a beneficial effect in the prevention and control of oxidative stress-based metabolic disorders.
