Mandibular resection and reconstruction for оral squamous cell carcinoma: Literature review

Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents the most common malignant tumor in the head and neck. A substantial percentage of the malignant tumors engage the floor of the mouth, gingivobuccal sulcus, marginal gingiva. Early stage malignancies usually do not involve the mandible. However, tumor excision often results in combined bone and soft-tissue defects, with or without loss of mandibular continuity. Impaired masticatory function, sensation, speech and aesthetics require effective treatment. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the reconstruction of mandibular defects, resulting in improved quality of life. This review examines modern reconstruction techniques, their indications, contraindications, as well as functional results.
