Features Of Health Care For Patients With Autism

Yuliana Georgieva

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorders are diverse. Their characteristics can be detected both at the earliest age (after 12 months) and much later.

According to the World Health Organization, autism spectrum disorders are characterized by difficulties in social communication and interaction, atypical patterns of activities and behavior, behavioral difficulties in transitioning from one activity to another, focusing on details and unusual responses to sensations.

Autism accompanies the individual throughout his life. Misunderstanding during communication is a major barrier to identifying the need for the autistic patient to receive quality medical and health care.

Objective: To investigate the barriers and factors of access to quality medical and health care for patients with autism spectrum disorder.

Methods: Documentary - to access literature and peer-reviewed research related to barriers and enablers to quality medical and health care for adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Historical - study of validated tools for researching the studied problem

Conclusions: The environment is a factor that can provoke anxiety and uncertainty in a patient with autism. Physical proximity to other people, sensory self-stimulation, disturbing sounds can be the cause of poor or impossible communication with an autistic patient. Poor communication and lack of understanding of the needs of the person with autism are the main factors that prevent them from receiving quality medical and health care.
