Introduction: The trend towards realizing motherhood at a later stage of a woman's life is constantly increasing. However, the later the planning of pregnancy and childbirth begins, the more likely it is not to be carried out. In this regard, the midwife is the health specialist who has a key role in the prevention of reproductive health and overcoming the causes of late parenthood. Counseling families with reproductive problems, in turn, requires the creation of clear standards, according to the midwife's competencies. They are of particular importance to the successful operation of this level of preventive services.
Objective: To determine whether the midwife has the competencies to overcome the reasons for delaying parenthood among men and women of childbearing age.
Materials and methods: An anonymous survey was conducted among 405 respondents: obstetricians and gynecologists, embryologists, senior and line nurses, midwives and patients. Reproductive medicine centers, maternity wards and pathological pregnancy wards are covered.
Results and discussion: In the analysis of the obtained results, we found that, according to the doctors, the midwife's role in overcoming the reasons for postponing parenthood is mainly to be a consultant to the woman on the issues of pregnancy and childbirth (40%) and conducting health education (40%). A relatively smaller part of them believe that midwives could be useful in this direction by implementing reproductive health prevention (20%).
Conclusions: The midwife's competences are highly appreciated by the experts and her activity is defined as significant in various directions (health education, consultant on pregnancy and childbirth issues, as well as reproductive health prevention). The legal arrangement for financing and valuation of midwifery activities will help to realize the midwife's autonomous activity. This, in turn, is a predictor that the midwife is not only a performer of manipulative activities, but a health specialist with a high contribution to the protection of reproductive health and increasing the health education of the population.
