THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A SMARTPHONE APPLICATION IN THE TEACHING OF STUDENTS IN THE MAJOR OF ECONOMICS OF TOURISM IN ENGLISH

Abstract

This paper presents a research project which focuses on the implementation of a smartphone application in the teaching of students in the major of Economics of Tourism in English. With the increased use of smartphone devices over the last years (mainly those using Android and iOS), many institutions of higher education use mobile learning in their educational process. A number of universities in Bulgaria have already made attempts to implement mobile learning as well: Varna Medical University, Ruse Technical University, Plovdiv University. The research will focus on the implementation of Moodle Mobile, the official smartphone application of Moodle in the learning process of students in the above mentioned major. It will study the usability of this application on the one hand. On the other hand, as the teaching will be conducted in English, it will study the usefulness of teaching materials that will be created specifically for this research, but can used further in various programs in English for the major of Economics of Tourism. We defend the thesis that when a full and mobile version of a Moodle site is available, the students will give preference to the mobile application when completing the activities specially designed for them.
