Abstract

Family planning is an important part of the overall demographic policy of each country. It allows each person and couple to achieve the desired number of children and the time of their birth. Nowadays the concept of family has been undergoing major changes in Bulgaria, as well as in all European countries.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to analyse family planning and key factors impact on the formation and reproductive intentions of the modern family.

Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was designed to investigate family planning in families at the time of submission of documents for state registration of marriage. Primary sociological information was collected through a direct individual survey.

Results: A total of 821 families were interviewed. There was an increase in the average marriage age for both men and women compared to the last 10 years. The group of students consisted predominantly of women, compared to the larger number of working men. One of the leading reasons for a couple's postponement of marriage is financial difficulty, followed by preparation of the wedding ceremony and the completion of studies. About 41% of respondents have a separate home.

Conclusion: Support for young couples and families is a crucial component in modern family planning
