Abstract

Medical interpreting in health care – a tool for overcoming language barriers between patient and medical staff Access to health care is a fundamental right of every human being, and good communication between patient and medical staff is crucial to providing and receiving quality and safe medical care. The lack or poor command of a shared communication language between the participants in the communication adversely affects the health service and accumulates additional pressure on patient and medical staff. The linguistic and cultural diversity of patients is a serious challenge for healthcare professionals, who identify language barriers as a major source of workplace stress and an obstacle to providing quality healthcare. This article examines the role of medical interpreting as a tool for overcoming language barriers between patient and medical staff and reflects the author's professional experience as an active medical interpreter at UMBAL Burgas AD. In conclusion, the article indicates good practices for minimizing language barriers in health care.
