ACTIVITIES OF THE NURSE DURING HEMOTRANSFUSION

Milena Milkova

Abstract

The application of hemotransfusion as a therapeutic method in contemporary healthcare is conditioned by the multifaceted action of blood products. Blood itself and blood products are unique. Their use as means of therapy is determined by the fact that the source of blood can only be a person and obtaining complete blood synthetically has not yet been achieved.

Aim: To outline and analyze the activities of the nurse in treatment with blood products.

Materials and methods: The study was conducted by self-developed instruments – a survey for recovered COVID-19 patients (n=175), a survey for nurses (n=106). The medical records of patients with convalescent plasma treatment in the first trimester of 2021 were studied (n=276). An in-depth interview was conducted with 9 experts. The study was carried out in the period 10.06.2021 - 02.08.2021. The data obtained were processed by SPSS for Windows, version 19.0.0. З Microsoft Office Excel 2010 was used for the graphical representation of data.
Results and discussion: The application of blood products in modern medicine, as part of the treatment of various pathological conditions, determines the need for the nurse to know well the essence of the process and adequately perform the activities during hemotransfusion. Experts believe that nurses are well prepared and successfully apply blood products. Almost half of the surveyed nurses share a
need to conduct post-graduate training – theoretical and practical courses for post-graduate qualification, thematically related to transfusion of blood products. (41.5%).
