Seasonal variability of blood pressure

Yoto Yotov

Abstract

Arterial hypertension (AH) is the most common disease worldwide and a major risk factor for the excess morbidity and mortality. Blood pressure (BP) in humans shows vari- ous types of variability: from hyperacute with every heart beat to more long-term, such as the seasonal. The morbid- ity and mortality, especially from cardiovascular diseases, show the definite relationship with the outdoor and indoor temperature. It increases during the colder months and drops down in summer. Evidence about the fact that seasonality is an important prognostic factor is presented. These seasonal changes in disease occurrence are to a great extent due to the seasonal variability of BP. Many studies show the BP varia- tion during the different seasons of the year, including our experience in Bulgaria. Conclusions are made that seasonal variability in BP affects the AH control and that new studies are needed to test how to influence this phenomenon in the future.
