In recent decades the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) has increased significantly due to various reasons such as aging, improved therapy and higher survival rates of patients with cardiovascular diseases. AF is associated with higher mortality rate, larger number of hospitalizations, lower quality of life and increased mortality. Therefore, the discovery of biomarkers of the pathological mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of arrhythmia and following complications will have a wide clinical application.
