Comparative analysis of the levels of circulating platelet-neutrophil complexes in newly diagnosed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients

Sheniz Yuzeir, Liana Gercheva

Abstract

Introduction: It has been established that the number of activated neutrophils and platelets increases in the presence of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. The formation of complexes between these cells is the main mechanism that connects haemostasis with inflammatory processes.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the level of circulating platelet-neutrophil complexes (PNC) before and after with platelet agonist stimulation (ADP and PMA).

Materials and Methods: A total 88 patients with pathologically verified non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) before chemotherapy and 20 healthy controls had their PNC levels analyzed. Levels of PNC were measured by flow cytometry analysis of peripheral blood.

Results: The platelet-neutrophil complex levels were significantly higher in patients with NHL compared to healthy controls (p < 0.01). The levels were significantly higher in the group of patients with aggressive NHL compared with the group of patients with indolent NHL.
