Reduced physical activity as a contributing factor to musculoskeletal disorders in education workers

Silviya Filkova, Nikolay Nedev, Yordan Georgiev, Antoaneta Tsvetkova

Musculoskeletal disorders associated with desk work are a common occupational hazard. The nature of the work requires repetitive hand movements while maintaining awkward static body positions. As a result, incorrect movement patterns are created, leading to increased stress on joints, muscle tension, and, consequently, muscle imbalance. With reduced physical activity resulting from modern lifestyles and pandemic conditions, the risk of musculoskeletal system diseases increases. These, in turn, lead to reduced work capacity, sick leave, and economic losses. Therefore, it is necessary to identify all factors contributing to the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders and propose prevention strategies with an emphasis on physical activity.
