Transoral Robotic Surgery for Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Mario Milkov

Abstract

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) defined at an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥5 was a mean of 22% in men and 17% in women in eleven published epidemiological studies pub-lished between 1993 and 2013. The gold standard treatment for OSA remains continuous positive airway pressure. Surgical treatment can then be offered as an option. Technological advancement has allowed tongue base reduction causing airway obstruction to be addressed using the da Vinci robotic system safely and with ease.
