PLUNC proteins - A New Side of the Pathogenesis of Chronic Rhinosinuitis

Abstract

Chronic rhinosinuitis is a persistent inflammatory process of the sinonasal mucosa. The basic defence mechanisms of the paranasal sinuses and the nose include the mucociliary clearance (which is a combination of the movements of the respiratory epithelium cilia and thin mucosal film) as well as different secretory proteins (which are part of the innate immune system). The upper respiratory tract mucosa serves as a gateway for different pathogens so the early detection of bacteria is essential for the defence of the
organism. This protection process consists of different groups of protein: PLUNC proteins (palate, lung and nasal epithelium clone), lipid transfer/lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LT/LBP), bactericidal/permeability increasing protein (BPI), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP). PLUNC proteins dysfunction is primery in developing the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinuitis for it creates a suitable environment, which can be conducive for microbial colonization.
