Abstract

Study proves efficacy and tolerability of a homeopathic combination preparation. In tonsillitis/pharyngitis not caused by group A streptococci, effectiveness of antibiotics is often not satisfactory with regard to improvement of complaints and rate of complications. Especially in children, homeopathic therapy may be an alternative. A meta-analysis of 26 placebo-controlled clinical trials with more than 12,000 patients with acute tonsillitis/pharyngitis (sore throat) shows that under antibiotic treatment in streoptococci-negative infections only a small reduction in duration of the disease and rate of complications was found in comparison to placebo. A clear effect was only described for group A streptococcal-positive patients in isolated cases. An open, randomised study on prescribing habits for sore throat in England, showed no statistically significant improvement of duration of illness or ability to work after antibiotic compared to non-antibiotic treatment.
According to the criteria of evidence-based medicine, routine administration of antibiotics in streptococci-negative tonsillitis is not indicated.
