Laparoscopic Methods of Treatment of Acute Complicated Appendicitis.

Abstract

Over the last decade, laparoscopic appendectomy has become a widely accepted approach for the treatment of acute appendecitis. Its advantages include lower morbidity, low rate of postoperative complications and quicker recovery. Minimally invasive surgery is also gaining popularity for complicated forms of acute appendicitis.Materials and methods: During the period between June, 2015 and December, 2015, surgery was performed on a total of 82 patients with acute appendicitis in the Surgical Unit of MHAT `Eurohospital` Plovdiv and the First Clinic of Surgery in UMHAT `St. George` Plovdiv. Patients with complicated cases and ones with laparoscopic surgery were also included in the group.Results: Complicated acute appendicitis was diagnosed in 14 of the 82 patients. Laparoscopic surgery was performed in 10 of these patients. The average operative time was 58 minutes. The average length of hospital stay was 5.2 days. Postoperative complications were observed in 1 patient with a wound infection.Conclusion: The laparoscopic approach is a valid alternative to open surgery in complicated acute appendicitis. When performed by experienced surgeons on carefully selected patients, laparoscopic surgery leads to good postoperative results and a low rate of complications.
