A comprehensive morphological investigation is carried out of C. albicans, C. tropicalis and G. Candidum tinder cultural, morphocytochemical and biochemical aspects. The analysis of the cultural investigations indicates that the fungi in question grow equally well over ConventIonal Sabouraud`s medium and over the yolk-tellurite medium of Panayotov. The latter offers the advantage of providing a clear cut recording of the reducting of the reductional capacity of G, candidum in relation in to potassium tellurite.
C. albicans, C. tropicalis and G. candidum display positive meuachromasia upon staining after Nissal.
The species investigatied manifest negative protease activity. Merely G. candidum has positive urease activity. The mannitol splitting test is negative in all the three species and hemolytic properties are likewise lacking. Magnesium ribonucleate and Feulgen positive substance are found in greatest quantities in G. candidum, whilst C. tropicalis is richest in metaphosphate. The auxanograms in the three species are identical. Succinic denydrogenase activity is positive in all three species, whereas alpha-glycerophosphate denydrogenase is active merely in C. albicans and C. tropicalis. Oxygen consumption is highest in G. candidum and lowest in C. tropicalis. The redox potential is different for the three species studied.
