The experience with the treatment of acute surgical diseases in children o f the surgical department for children-Chair of Surgical Diseases, gained over the past nine years, since the foundation of the Higher Medical Institute in Varna, is shared. The case materiьl comprises 2027 children , aged from 0 - 14 years. Acute appendicitis is accounted for as a mass acute surgical condition. The lethality reported amounts to 0,7 %, whereas for acute appendicitis it is onвy 0, 05%. The long-term results of the surgical treatment of the so-called catarral appendicitis and mesenterial appendicitis are followed up and the necessity is pointed out of greater operative activity. In vaginations in children, owing to the still unsurmountahle diagnostical difficulties in certain regions of North-Eastern Bulgaria, account for a comparatively high mortality rate - 28 percent. The major part of the chidren with a cute intestinal obstruction on were treated at local health service units, and hence, the authors conclude that the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment should de made at the same units. The good obtained aftersetting up the surgical department for children in Varna warrant the inferen ce that the creatione of specialized surgical departments for children, with qualified children surgeons, would greatly contribute for the further improvement of the results of treatment of acute surgical disea ses in childhood.
