Progressive changes in body composition occur with aging. The aim of the study was to analyze body composiĀtion and to assess the changes that occur with age in Bulgarian women. A cross-sectional study of 123 apparently healthy women aged 19-89 years was conducted. Body composition was measured using a direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer (InBody 170). The body fat mass (BFM) of the participants increased with age and reached its peak in 60-69-years-old women. The body fat percentage (BFP) and visceral fat (VF) also increased with age and reached the highest values in women over 70 years. The opposite tendency was observed for fat-free mass (FFM). Its values decreased in elderly women. The results suggested that in women aged 19-89 years there a progressive increase of mean BFM, PBF and VF and reduction of FFM were noted.
