A series of 124 patients with open fractures is reviewed; fractures of the upper limb prevail. In 91 of them emergency operative treatment is imperative and osteosynthesis is carried in 61 - extra-and intramedullary osteosynthesis. The majority of the patients are children and young people aged up to 40 years.
Complications as suppuration of soft tissues, osteomyelitis, pseudarthrosis are noted in exceedingly small number of cases with open fractures and therefore the inference is reached that osteosynthesis of open fractures under the protection of antibiotics is a safe procedure. The measures undertaken for enhancing callus formation yield good results.
