Abstract

A peculiar pattern in the disposition of the caecum ascendens is described, outlining a figure resembling the letter ,,S` and situated obliquely on the leftside. A similar finding is discovered in five patients, of which one is in suckling age. Characteristic for the figure described is the finding of two additional fixed pouchings of the colon ascendens: one in the neighbourhood of the Bauhin`s valve (ileocecal valve), and the other midway between the cecum and flexura hepatica. It is assumed that the stability referred to is due to congenital mal- development with adhesions of the mesenterium or peritoneum, and is by no means subsequent to secondarily fixed „coecum mobile`. Roentgenograms are presented in support to the latter statement, illustrating a similar finding in a newborn child and another one in a 42-year-old man. Insofar the abnormal disposition of the proximal part of the colon is concerned, the authors propose coining it with the term colon ascendens birecurvatum (doubly bent colon ascendens).
