Thirty healthy individuals (the half of them smokers) were subjected to а test examination with view to finding out whether the vasoconstricting effect of nicotine in the group of smokers is analogous to that with persons not smoking tobacco.
The study was carried out bу means of sphygmographic set (apparatus system „Cardirex-Siemens"). The investigation was commenced early in the morning, before taking any meal with patient in recumbency for а half an hour duration, after which the sphygmographic record was made. Immediately after smoking а cigarette for five minutes without making any movements and with deep respiration of the smoke, а second sphygmogram was taken, which was repeated four times at 4 minutes interval.
The results oblained give ground for the following inference to bе made:
The tachycardia observed after smoking occurs more rapidly and lastlonger with the group of non-smokers as compared to smokers
The amplitudes of the sphygmograms up to the 4th minute are slightly increased parallelly to the pulse rate, whereas after the 4th minute it shows а reversed attitude with respect to the pulse rate.
Changes were not marked in the appearance of the sphygmogram with exception of those due to the altered amplitude.
