Oral lichen planus—clinical characteristics and diagnosis. A review

Irena Georgieva

Abstract

Introduction: Lichen planus is the most common mucocutaneous autoimmune inflammatory disease of the skin and/or mucous membranes. It is a Т-cell-mediated immune response of hypersensitivity to self-intraepithelial antigens of the skin and mucous membranes. The oral lichen planus is more common than the cutaneous one. The etiology of the disease is unknown and the main clinical feature of lichen planus is a reticular hyperkeratotic lesion—the Wickham’s striae. The diagnosis of the disease is based on clinical, histopathological results and immunological data.

Aim: The aim of this review article is to summarize the clinical features of different forms of oral lichen planus and their diagnosis in dental practice.

Materials and Methods: The review is based on the summary of previous and latest updates of different researches in the years.

Conclusion: The role of dental clinician can be crucial for early diagnosis of lichen planus. The understanding of the clinical symptoms and diagnosis of this disease are important for the accurate treatment of lesions.
