Anemia and nutrition deficiency in dental practice

Abstract

Orofacial manifestation and symptoms may be the first clinical signs of anemias and focus attention to the dentists to clarify the causes and consultation with relevant experts. In 183 dental patients we determined the serum concentrations of folate, vitamin B12, iron level (in 125 persons) and vitamin D (in 16 patients). All patients in the study had oral manifestations typically for anemic conditions. We detect iron deficiency in 3.97%, 1.6% were with folic acid deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency had 11.4%. Total deficit associated with erythropoiesis was establish in 17% of cases of dental patients. Deficiency require consideration and discussion of the causes. In each patient with established erythropoietin deficiency is recomended consultation with a hematologist or internist.
