Study of the opinion of students from the midwife program on prenatal education for pregnant women in Bulgaria

Todorka Boeva, Rumyana Laleva

Birth is a great physical, emotional and social event in the life of a woman. The programs for parents are structured on didactic techniques for prenatal education of pregnant women. They are consistent with the medical, psycho-emotional and socio-economic aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. The most common and popular method was developed by the French obstetrician Ferdinand Lamaze. His method involves relaxation, meditation and controlled breathing.

The American obstetrician Robert Bradley created his own methodology for preparing for birth. He suggested using psychotherapeutic methods for relaxation during contractions. Marie Morgan developed a method of birth under hypnosis. It is based on self-hypnosis, entering into a state of light trance, to reduce the activity of consciousness.

The aim of this study is to assess the attitude of the students from the Мidwife program to prenatal education for pregnant women in our country. The study includes 120 students from the 3rd and 4th year of the medical universities of Varna, Pleven and Rousse. A questionnaire with open- and closed-ended questions was developed for the purposes of the survey. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data obtained established the following: more than half of the respondents believe the preparation of pregnant women for childbirth in women‘s consultation to not be comprehensive enough (62%).

Over 70% of students find a difference in the behavior of the woman in labor depending on her prenatal preparation. Тhe three groups of respondents are clear in their opinion that pregnant women need additional training before entering into the delivery room (91%). About 65% agree that this should happen twice a month. There are different opinions in regard to the the initiation of prenatal preparation. Fifty- five percent of Midwife students feel well-prepared and would accept the challenge to participate as consultants during the pregnancy.

Conclusions: According to the students there is a difference in the behavior of pregnant women attending classes for pregnant. Early and regular prenatal care for pregnant women is required before entering the delivery room as this will increase the chances of a normal course of labor.

Additional training in the form of thematic units in the Obstetrics and Gynecology sector is an appropriate supplement to the basic education of midwives.
