Since 1985, the International Health Community has believed that the best rate of Cesarean section must be between 10-15% of the total number of births. Since then, C-section surgery has become a more frequent intervention worldwide. Data for Bulgaria shows that in 2015 C-section was 35% and is increasing. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and compare the opinions of pregnant and non-pregnant (nulliparous) women regarding the reasons for the high rate of Cesarean births in our country.
Materials and Methods: The opinion of 40 pregnant women and 30 non-pregnant, (nulliparous) women was examined during the study. Documentary method, statistical (questionnaire) method and contextual analysis were used for the purposes of the research. The survey was conducted between July 1, 2016 - July 20, 2016 in Veliko Turnovo.
The results indicate that all pregnant women want to give birth naturally. The opinion that the most common reason for cesarean is the fear of pain is confirmed. The second reason is the recommendation of the physician whom women trust. Every third nonpregnant woman said that she was afraid of giving birth. One in five fears future birth. More than half of the pregnant women (63%) would choose the `team selection` option as a strategy for coping with fear and anxiety. Half of the pregnant women would like their partners to attend during the labour.
