Types of fiberposts and techniques used for restoration after endodontic treatment - literature review

Abstract

Choosing the right type of restoration for the re- construction of endodontically treated teeth can some- times present as a real challenge. Usage of intracanal posts is an often practiced procedure for that type of restoration, especially in cases with little coronal tooth tissue remaining. The attempts to provide optimal me- chanical properties, longevity of the tooth and aesthet- ics resulted in the development of different materials and techniques.

The aim of this article is to present one type of post restoration - a reconstruction with fiber reinforced posts. We summarize the main indications, advan- tages and disadvantages of fiber posts, compare them to the conventional metal ones, describe some possible complications and different cementation techniques. We also review various fiber post systems, that differ mainly in the types of fiber used, diameter and form of the post, fiber/matrix ratio, possibility for light trans- mission and physical properties.

Fiber post restorations show a significantly high- er survival rate of the teeth. They don`t always guar- antee success, but have a lot of advantages compared to the metal ones mainly in better physical proper- ties, elastic modulus similar to the one of the dentin, better resistance during repeated functional stress, as well as possibility for adhesive cementation and ad- hesive bonding to both the remaining tooth structures and the build-up material. Their advantages in me- chanics in addition to the obvious ones in aesthetics, present them as a treatment option that both protects and conserves the remaining structures of devitalized teeth. Therefore fiber posts should always be consid- ered as a treatment option when restoration of an end- odontically treated tooth is required.
