Necroptosis is a type of alternative cell death which can be triggered be extracellular apoptotic stimula- tion in cells with suppressed apoptosis. It is an import- ant and vertebrate-specific mechanism that has arisen most likely as an additional defense against immune cells and pathogens resistant to apoptosis. The two types of cell death: apoptosis and necropstosis are regu- lated by different signal pathways, but they have com- mon inducers like reactive oxygen spices (ROS), deple- tion of ATP and DNA-damaging agents. Induction of necroptosis can be an effective therapeutic strategy in the treatment of malignant tumors. A more detailed study is needed about the signal pathways in necropto- sis, this will help determining the targets of necroptosis and creating new antitumor agents.
