Diseases associated with Helicobacter pylori infection

Vladimir Panov

Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative microorganism and an important factor in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases including gastro-intestinal perturbations (peptic ulcer, gastric carcinoma, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma), metabolic, autoimmune, vascular and systemic disorders: in the cardiovascular system - ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, Rhein's disease; in the nervous system - headaches and migraines; autoimmune diseases - arthritis, immune thrombocytopenia, Henoch-Schonline's disease, Sjögren's syndrome, autoimmune thyroiditis; skin diseases - rosacea, urticaria, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, prurigo nodularis, purpura and others - iron deficiency anemia, growth retardation, amenorrhea, halitosis, aphthous ulcerations. H. pylori was detected in samples from patients with hepatobiliary disorders, hepatic diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and fibrosis.

There is a tendency for accumulation of evidence for the role of H. pylori in the etiology and pathogenesis of multiple conditions and diseases. However, this topic requires considerable research before the microorganism's final "accusation" for their presence.
