General anesthesia is an artificially induced, controlled condition consisting of lack of consciousness, accompanied by loss of protective reflexes, independent breathing, and inability to respond to physical stimuli and verbal commands.
Sedation is a minimal level of central nerve system depression at the subconscious level. The patient has independent breathing and responds to physical stimuli and verbal commands; all reflexes are preserved. During sedation the patient is conscious.
For pediatric dentistry, general anesthesia is a pharmacological technique of behavioral management motivated by the need for diagnostics and treatment to ensure the safety and comfort of the dentist and the patient.
