Application Of The Computed And Mri Tomography In Hepatic Echinococcosis

Abstract

Echinococcosis is a common parasitic disease of the liver caused by the larvae of the hydatid tapeworm. Hydatid cysts can occur anywhere in the body. There are two types of echinococcal tapeworms. In Echino-coccus granulosus the dog is the main host. Echinococ-cus alveolaris/multilocularis is less common, but more invasive and the fox is the main host. The structure of the echinococcal cyst is directly related to the observed radiographic features.

Computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic res-onance imaging (MRI) were correlated to macroscopic and microscopic pathology. Characteristic signs made recognition of hydatid disease possible, sometimes even when serologic tests had been non-conclusive. Assess-ment of other cysts throughout the body with or with-out involvement of neighboring organs or tissues al-lowed appropriate therapeutic management. CT and MRI also played a key role in recognizing complica-tions (e.g., rupture, infection of cysts).
