The present research, as part of an empirical sociological study, aims to evaluate the attitude and preferences of the students from the "Physician assistant" specialty at Medical Faculty Stara Zagora about continuing education and specialization, as a means of improving the professional qualification, with a subsequent possibility of providing qualitative medical care in accordance with the current legal framework in Bulgaria and international tendencies.
Methods: During the period November - December 2016 an empirical sociological study was conducted, which consisted of a semi-structured face-to-face interview with all 42 students of the specialty. Results: The majority of the physician assistants (39) approve the compulsory nature of the continuing postgraduate education at qualification levels, not only as an opportunity to improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but also as a motivation for their career development. In accordance with Ordinance №1, introduced in 2015, the respondents have a different attitude towards specialization but most of the students (27) have preference for Emergency Health Care. The medical model of training and specific qualification are the provoking reasons for the physician assistants to express their concern about the extent to which their preparedness for diagnostics and treatment will be improved by specialization in health care, taking into account how the specialties are defined in the ordinance. The students define the education in “Physician assistant” specialty at Master’s degree as fair and logical opportunity in accordance with the international experience.
Conclusion: The results of the research demonstrate that the physician assistant students approve and are willing to undergo a postgraduate education while anticipating the continuing training and specialization opportunities for the physician assistants to be adjusted to the real necessities of the professionals in this specialty, in accordance with the medical model of training and established international experience.
