The present report discusses the personality traits as one of the factors related to the initiation of substance abuse and the progression of alcohol and drug abuse, and the dependence among adolescents. The analysis of recent scientific articles focused on this topic clearly points out the following trends:
1. Several characteristics displayed during the childhood seemed to be indicative of substance abuse in adolescence. Some examples of this tendency are the presence of depressive mood in the childhood period and the manifestation of physical aggression in early childhood, which persists during the subsequent stages of development.
2. Certain personality dispositions such as low self-esteem, emotional disturbance, novelty seeking and risky behaviors displayed in early adolescence are indicative of early onset of drug abuse and subsequent substance abuse.
3. A number of articles pay attention to personality traits such as anxiety and some risky behaviors that are closely related to the maintenance of the drug abuse over time. Sensation seeking also belongs to this set of traits. It is seen as a factor related to treatment drop out among adolescents.
The data provided in this analysis allows specific guidelines for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of drug abusing adolescents to be outlined.
