Updating the classification of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

Plamen Vasilev

Abstract

The classifications of tumors by the World Health Organization (WHO) are continuously updated to incorporate the latest scientific advancements and findings from numerous studies conducted by scientific research centers and universities around the world. In the era of globalization and easy access to scientific information, we can anticipate more frequent revisions of these classifications. In 2018, the WHO published an updated histopathological classification of skin tumors. The previous edition had been in use since 2006, necessitating an update to accurately and precisely describe the malignant processes involved. Descriptions of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin (cSCC) in the new classification are systematized similarly to the previous one, based on epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, histopathology, clinical features, anatomic location, staging, predictive, and prognostic factors. It sequentially covers premalignant keratoses, in situ forms, and invasive forms of squamous cell carcinoma. Adjustments have been made, certain histological variants have been added or removed, and keratoacanthomas, previously considered conditionally malignant, have now been categorically classified as squamous cell carcinomas in the current classification.
