Aim: The aim of this article is to evaluate the safety of immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS).
Materials and Methods: A retrospective study including 28 patients (56 eyes) who underwent bilateral phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was conducted. The assessed outcomes included the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications.
Results: The incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications was comparable to that reported in previous studies on unilateral and immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery. Intraoperatively, posterior capsule rupture requiring ciliary sulcus IOL implantation occurred in one eye (1.79%). Postoperatively, toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) was observed in one eye (1.79%), corneal stromal edema—in eight eyes (14.29%), and fibrin formation in the anterior chamber—in three eyes (5.36%). No vision-threatening complications resulting in permanent visual loss were observed.
Conclusion: In our study, ISBCS was not associated with an increased incidence of serious intraoperative or postoperative complications.
