Rare diseases affect no more than 5 in 10000 persons in the European Union (EU). This specific problem has been established as a policy priority at EU level. Lack of expertise on rare disorders has been pointed out in particular as a reason for late diagnosis and limited access to medical care.

The aim of this survey is to evaluate the awareness and opinion of medical students in Plovdiv about rare diseases and problems that physicians, patients and their families face.

The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Medical University of Plovdiv among undergraduate students. The survey included 12 questions divided into three sections: sociodemographic characteristics, level of awareness on rare diseases; personal opinion and suggestions for improvement

The questionnaire was completed by a total of 1193 (55.62%) out of 2107 students . Only 12.5% of the students indicated the correct prevalence of a disease to be considered rare in the EU. Less than 1% of the respondents were familiar with the methods of primary prevention methods of rare diseases. Of the total number 54.9% stated that the most common problem of people with rare disorders is the combination of lack of information, access to treatment and late diagnosis.
