DEVELOPMENT OF ONCOLOGY NURSE NAVIGATION MODEL: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

Ufuk Aytepe, Elif Dönmez

Abstract

Aim: This research aimed to develop an Oncology Nurse Navigation Model for Turkey.

Material and methods: This research was qualitative research that used a phenomenological research design. The research sample consisted of patients who received at least one dose of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, nurses and physicians who worked for at least six months and worked in the care process of the patients in the oncology clinic of a training and research hospital in Edirne. The data were collected through the semi-structured interview method which was made individually using the “Descriptive Information Form” created by the researcher for patients, nurses and physicians and the “Semi-Structured Interview Form” created separately for each target group.

Results and discussion: The results of this research were presented in three sections. The sociodemographic and descriptive characteristics of the participants were included in the first section. Eight themes were determined as a result of interviews with patients, nurses and physicians. These were; communication, psychological needs, health services provided, coping with cancer, experienced symptoms during the cancer process, nursing roles, physician services and caring for cancer patients. The results of these themes were presented under the headings in the second section. The results of the similar and different aspects of the results obtained from patients, nurses and physicians were included in the third section.

Conclusion: As a result of this research, the cancer patients’ navigation services needs were determined during the cancer diagnosis and treatment process. An Oncology Nurse Navigation Model was created according to these identified needs. It is recommended that this model be used in studies and be tested in different groups.
