THE ENGLISH ECOSYSTEM PROJECT – A WAY TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO UPGRADE THEIR ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE

Sylvia Yohanova, Yuliyana Todorova

Abstract

Since Jan. 2023 UE-Varna has been part of the ENGLISH ECO SYSTEM project. We are still expecting the project approval but, after active work on preparing all necessary documents for the application, we feel eager to share the essence of the project.

Being aware of the current condition of curricula, teaching processes and student's attitude to learning English in Bulgarian universities, we strongly believe that there are ways of improving them all. That is the reason for us to be part of the above-mentioned project. Basically, what it will do and offer as a result is: a joint Curriculum and an English center in each of the partner universities. Both are meant for learners with foreign-language competence A1 – B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The partner teams are going to develop joint Curriculum and English Language Support Platform (Software) to be used free of charge by members of the participating universities. This joint curriculum and ELSP will help build an English-Speaking Ecosystem among partner universities. Some features of ELSP: it will be both for in-class (by a teacher) and out-of-class use (both by students and a teacher) and it will enhance communication between students (learners from partner countries will be able to get in touch with each other).

As for the English center (an English-speaking place only), we aim to create an English Speaking Ecosystem. In it there will be International/English Speaking Student Clubs, a Library with English materials, a Meeting Room for Listening, Speaking and other Planned events. The Center is also expected to support students' meetings between partner countries within the scope of the “My English Speaking Friend” Project, which aims to encourage English Communication Practice.
