ENRICHING THE PROFESSIONAL REPERTOIRE OF MEDICAL OPTICIANS THROUGH DIVERSE VOCABULARY TECHNIQUES

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how specialized English can be taught and mastered by means of diverse and attractive activities, based on the purposefully designed course-book “Professional Communication in English: Medical Optics”. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary instruction as an essential element of the current methodology for teaching English for professional purposes. The paper concentrates in detail on the suggested graded combination of various, both well-known and relatively new, vocabulary techniques in ESP teaching, such as matching words to form lexical collocations and sentence completion, word formation exercises, definitions, synonyms and antonyms, homonyms, listening tasks, games, doing crosswords and puzzles.
