Introduction: Correct differentiation of lesions on the teeth, affected by molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is extremely important for the appropriate diagnosis and subsequent management. In the scientific literature, there are different classification and assessment systems. Here, some of the most widely used classifications will be reviewed and compared: EAPD, MHSI, MIH-SSS, MIH-TNI, MIH/HSPM index.
Aim: The aim of this article is to examine and compare the different classifications used in the differentiation of MIH lesions in order to assist the clinician in the correct defining of the lesions and subsequent treatment.
Materials and Methods: Articles related to the topic were searched in the databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, as well as in selected textbooks.
Results and Discussion: The articles discuss the advantages and disadvantages of modern classifications for the differentiation of MIH lesions. Given the many different classifications for determining the severity of MIH, it is of particular importance to determine the purpose of registering the lesions in order to choose the most appropriate classification according to the needs of the clinician and the study. In a screening study for the prevalence of MIH in the population, the use of simplified assessment tools has an advantage. When tracking lesions over time, it is more appropriate to use more detailed and descriptive classifications.
Conclusion: All classifications for assessing MIH lesions have their advantages and disadvantages. The choice of which assessment tool to use should be made according to the objectives of the study and the desired outcome.
