The lip bumper is a single-jaw, non-removable orthodontic appliance with a combined action. It is mainly intended for the lower jaw and is specially designed to distalize the lower first molars and eliminate the harmful effect of the lips and cheeks on the dental arch and alveolar ridge. It consists of support elements, an arch wire, and a shield. There are several modifications of the appliance, each of which aims to improve its action. A frequently observed side effect of treatment with the appliance is the disruption of the normal eruption of the second lower molar. Under the pressure of the labial muscles, a force is transmitted that distalizes the first molars. This can hinder the eruption of the second molars or lead to impaction. Maintaining oral hygiene during treatment with the lip bumper is essential. Poor hygiene habits can lead to plaque buildup, which is a prerequisite for numerous inflammations, including disruption of the appliance's function. The purpose of this article is to present the appliance, its modifications, and the laboratory protocol for its manufacture. To achieve this goal, literature and internet sources on the subject were studied and analyzed, and personal experience was used. The appliance is manufactured as part of the exercises in the elective course "Current Technologies in Orthodontics." The lip bumper has established itself as an effective and reliable orthodontic appliance that eliminates the adverse effects of the oral muscles, increases the size of the lower dental arch, and provides the right conditions for proper tooth alignment, especially during the mixed dentition period, while preserving space for the eruption of the premolars.
