Yoga as an Eastern practice: myths and realities

Nikolay Nedev, Nezabravka Martinova, Siyana Marinova

Abstract

Yoga originated as an Eastern practice thousands of years ago in Northwest India and was systematized in Srimad Patanjali's classic treatise, The Yoga Sutra. The diverse range of yoga schools and practices found today can be attributed to its widespread geographical influence, which reflects the distinct characteristics of different cultures and is largely intertwined with the religious traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. As yoga gained popularity in the Western world, new theories and concepts emerged, aiming to make it more accessible to Western practitioners. There are also opponents of yoga practices who associate it with the religions of India and compare it to a tool for mass manipulation of human consciousness.

Exploring the truths and misconceptions surrounding yoga practices reveals a shift in understanding regarding its scientific validity, its role in maintaining physical and mental well-being, and its potential to shape a new way of life. Yoga, as an ancient practice from the East, facilitates transformative changes in physical and mental health, empowering individuals to unlock their full potential and develop it further.

The objective of this article is to shed light on the myths and realities surrounding yoga practices.
