Introduction: There is a general tendency towards using supraglottic devices in ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeries. The Aim of the study is to determine and characterize the specifics and complications of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) use during septoplasty.
Materials and methods: A 2-year prospective cohort study of 30 patients who underwent septoplasty in the Department of ENT Surgery; University Hospital "Queen Giovanna"- ISUL; Medical University-Sofia.
Results and discussion: Mean age of the patients included in the study is 31.17 years. A predominance of male sex is observed: men – 70%, women – 30%. Most patients have low preoperative ASA grades. Intraoperatively the hemodynamic profile showed no variability of the followed parameters. None of the patients suffered desaturation during the operation. LMA displacement and need for repositioning by the anesthesiologist was observed in 3.33% of the patients. In all patients ETCO2 values are in the normal range.
Conclusion: The results from the study showed that LMA can be successfully and safely used in patients during septoplasty.
