Static and Dynamic Posturography in the Daily Practice of Otorhinolaryngologists and Physicians in Dental Medicine

Miroslav Stoykov, Mario Milkov

Abstract

Introduction: Postural control is maintained through the integration of sensory information from the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems within the central nervous system. Static and dynamic posturography provide objective and quantitative methods for assessing balance and sensory integration in the clinical practice. These technologies are widely used in otorhinolaryngology for the evaluation of vestibular disorders and have recently gained attention in dental medicine due to the potential influence of the stomatognathic system on posture.
Materials and Methods: The present study is based on a review of scientific publications indexed in PubMed, MEDLINE, and ScienceDirect, as well as technical documentation from manufacturers of posturography systems. Both static and dynamic posturography techniques were analyzed, including computerized dynamic posturography protocols such as the Sensory Organization Test. Additionally, technological characteristics of contemporary posturography systems, including Virtualis and Chinesport platforms, were examined.
Results and Discussion: Posturography enables quantitative assessment of balance by measuring center-of-pressure displacement and analyzing sensory integration mechanisms. In otorhinolaryngology, dynamic posturography is widely used to identify vestibular dysfunction and to monitor rehabilitation outcomes. In dental medicine, research indicates that occlusal changes and prosthetic rehabilitation may influence postural stability, particularly in edentulous patients. Technological advances, including virtual reality–based systems such as Virtualis, have expanded the clinical application of posturography by integrating diagnostic evaluation with rehabilitation protocols, whereas traditional platforms such as Chinesport remain valuable for standardized biomechanical assessment.
Conclusions: Static and dynamic posturography represent important diagnostic tools for evaluating postural control. Their application in otorhinolaryngology and dental medicine highlights the role of multidisciplinary approach, multisensory integration in maintaining balance and supports the integration of modern technological platforms in clinical practice.
