Anatomical and morphological terminology of teeth – A systematic literature review in the context of dental technician education

Radostina Vasileva, Valya Pencheva

Abstract

The anatomy and morphology of teeth represent a fundamental pillar in the education of dental technician specialists. Mastery of specialized terminology is essential for the precise understanding of anatomical structures, the functional properties of teeth, and their accurate replication in prosthetic restorations. The consistent use of standardized terminology is critical for both scholarly communication and practical application in the reconstruction of dental anatomy.

This study aims to systematically organize the key terminology employed in dental anatomy and morphology courses within the “Dental Technician” curriculum and to clarify its practical significance. It addresses concepts related to tooth structure, the morphological characteristics of various tooth groups, and terminology associated with surface anatomy. A review of the literature was conducted to compare terminological approaches and identify prevailing trends in educational practice. The study also presents a comprehensive table of dental anatomical terminology, with specific terms highlighted and contextualized through a critical literature review.
