Introduction: The shortage of physicians in the Emergency Medical Centers (EMCs) in Bulgaria necessitates the intensive use of non-physician emergency teams. This turns the maintenance of high professional competence among nurses and feldshers/physician assistants into a critical factor for the quality of emergency care.
Aim: To investigate the subjective continuing education needs of healthcare professionals in EMCs and to identify gaps in their practical and psychological skills influenced by the work environment.
Materials and Methods: A quantitative study was conducted (April 2026) among 100 medical professionals from EMC-Silistra (n = 64) and EMC-Razgrad (n = 36). A self-developed anonymous questionnaire containing 18 closed-ended questions and Likert scales was utilized. The data were processed using descriptive and comparative statistical analysis.
Results: The sample was characterized by a high proportion of specialists over 50 years of age (52%) and professional experience of over 10 years (61%). The predominant form of completed training was theoretical (61% lectures). The needs analysis highlights the highest demand for refreshing knowledge in the areas of working under stress, management of severe trauma, emergency drug therapy, and resuscitation. Frequent difficulties were recorded when dealing with aggressive patients (35%).
Discussion: There is a serious institutional deficit of practically oriented and simulation-based forms of training.
