Biological Aspects of in Vitro Fertilization in Patients with Poor Ovarian Reserve

Gergana Ingilizova, Ivan Kostov, Ivan Lazarov, Daniela Velkova

Abstract

Poor ovarian response to a controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (ÑÎÍ) results, usually, in a reduced follicular response which leads to a diminished number of retrieved oocytes. The low ovarian reserve is defined by the following characteristics: i) older patients or patients with another risk factor leading to low ovarian reserve, ii) previous poor ovarian response, and iii) deviation from the normal levels of the examined ovarian reserve. The aim of the present survey is to review the literature data about the influence of the poor ovarian response on the quantity and quality of the retrieved oocytes and preimplantational embryos during IVF/ICS cycles in a particular group of patients as well as to highlight future directions for procedures and research in this field in order to elaborate prognostic criteria for the assessment of procedural outcome of assisted reproduction and for the improvement of the results from a biological viewpoint.
